BROOKSVILLE - Only 13 days from now, people will be able to swap out the large SunPass transponder sticking on their front windshield for a smaller, economy-sized model.
The electronic toll-recording "sticker tag" goes on sale July 1 for $4.99 at Publix, CVS and turnpike service plazas.
This one is about the size of a credit card, doesn't require batteries and should blend into most windshields when viewed from the outside.
Roughly the size of a credit card, the SunPass mini will automatically deduct tolls as motorists use the pass-through lanes on any of Florida's turnpikes. The smaller-sized unit is nontransferable from vehicle to vehicle, which could be a positive or negative.
It serves as a deterrent to thieves because the unit will simply break if they try to steal it.
But multiple SunPass users in the family will have to buy more than one device if they want them for their entire fleet.
The existing "hardcase" transponders will continue to be available for customers who prefer the light and audible tone options and the portability aspect.
Customers who buy the new sticker tag and complete the registration process, including opening an account with a minimum $10 balance, will automatically receive a $4.99 rebate.
So, in effect, the new unit will be free.
In other turnpike news:
The redesign of the toll plazas off State Road 50 and County Line Road should be completed in August, according to Joanne Hurley, community relations coordinator for Florida's Turnpike.
The outside lanes at those interchanges are being converted to SunPass-only lanes.
