Temporary Tags Must Be Properly Displayed

Published: July 2, 2008

A new law effective Tuesday requires motorists to display their temporary tag in the proper license plate bracket.

Common practice is to prop a temporary tag in a rear window, but law enforcement could ticket motorists for that now with a non-moving traffic violation. The non-criminal infraction carries a fine of at least $30.

Temporary tags will also carry the same personal information as a real license plate from now on. This provides law enforcement with the registered owner and home address instead of simply the place the car was bought.

"The new law related to temporary license plates is a great tool for law enforcement officers," Florida Highway Patrol Director John Czernis said in a prepared statement.
