BRANDON – There was a bit of good news and not so good news over the weekend for the Central High wrestling team concerning what it did in the 24th annual Tony Ippolito Memorial Wrestling Tournament held at Brandon High School.
The good news was that Danny May (at 189 pounds) finished fourth while Nathan Brazeau (215) finished fifth in the 30-team tournament.

Ramirez: still not 100%

The not so good news concerns 130-pound junior Vince Ramirez. After sitting out over a month due to a shoulder injury, Ramirez wrestled one match Friday in the tournament before being withdrawn by his coach Roy Reyes.
"The game plan was, win or lose, injured or not, no matter how you feel afterward, you're going to wrestle one match," Reyes said Saturday night. "He's got two weeks before the district tournament. He's going to have the shoulder checked out Monday and then we'll take it from there."
Reyes said that after his match Friday, Ramirez said his shoulder was still sore, but that if it had been in the district or regional tournament, he would have wrestled.
"It was aggravating him a little and it's cutting back on his offense," explained Reyes. "But Vince would wrestle someone with one arm."

Two placers

Besides Ramirez, the Bears, who finished 15th in the tournament, had two other wrestlers earn top-five finishes.
Danny May, a second-year wrestler, whose record for the year now stands at 23-15 with 12 pins, went 5-2 over the weekend.
May was pinned by top-seed Andrew Fulk of Bradenton-Manatee at 1:23 in his first match. But after that, May came back and won four straight matches before losing the bout for third place to Chris Kavouklis of Tampa Jesuit, 5-2.
Meanwhile, at 215 pounds, Brazeau (22-7-11 this year) bested Garret Jones of Middleton 7-0 in the first round of the tournament and then pinned Nephi Solorzano of Bayshore at 5:30 to advance to the quarterfinals.
He then lost to Phil Uno of Brandon when he was pinned at 5:13 before losing to Eric Stroud of Pasco, 6-4, and then dropping the fifth-place match to Kevin Colon of St. Cloud when he was pinned in 2:08.
"They are football players but now they're becoming wrestlers," Reyes said. "And to come into a tournament like this and place in the top five with so little experience. This was definitely a confidence booster for those two."
Even though the Bears finished in 15th overall, Reyes was pleased that some other wrestlers made a good showing this weekend.
"Shaun Cadoret was one win from placing in the top six and Wayne Snell won two matches this weekend," shared Reyes. "We're getting better; this was a good look for us because almost all of our regional competition is here."
But Reyes also has the health of Ramirez to worry about.
"No matter what, his shoulder is going to bother him," Reyes said.
Ramirez beat Marshall Greene of Bradenton-Bayshore, 11-9, in his one match of the tournament.
"We didn't want to force him to wrestle through the tournament and get a place because in the end," said Reyes, "this tournament is meaningless. Everything matters at the end of the season."
While the sophomore grappler has seen a doctor, the rest he prescribed has not helped very much.
"Originally, the doctor told us it was a sprain and to rest it," indicated Reyes. "Well, we did for five weeks and it's still no better.
"Districts and regional are so much more important.
"It's frustrating to both him and us, but he's a competitor," added Reyes.
