Why You Should Vote

We've received numerous telephone calls lately from people asking why they should vote in the 2008 Presidential Preference election. They say their vote won't count.

People should not need a reason to vote but if they ask, what we tell them is this: It is because it is our right to vote as citizens of the United States of America. Safe and open elections are what our soldiers have fought and died for throughout our history and what people in countries all over the world are fighting and dying for today.

And, although the Florida Legislature has taken away the Democratic delegates and cut the Republican delegates in half by moving up the date of the Presidential Preference Primary, thereby defying the rules of both parties, they have not taken away our opportunity to tell the candidates as well as the rest of the country who we want to be our president.

By voting we will have a voice and the more people that vote the louder our voice will be. So, get out there and vote, Folks, it's your duty and privilege.

Vote 'No' On Amendment 1
I encourage every voter in the state to read Amendment 1 concerning property taxes on the Jan. 29 ballot. I received my copy of the Official Ballot today, and can clearly tell that this is something that needs you to vote "No!"

This amendment reads as if a kindergarten class wrote it. It really does nothing to address the actual property tax problem. The doubling of the Homestead exemption is an absolute falsehood.

Part of the tax is exempted so the true net will be less than double to $50,000, and the way I read the amendment, it is written to help the rich and ignore the lower income people because the extra $25,000 applies to the value from $50,000 to $75,000, not from as a contiguous amount starting at $1.

The reality is that our elected officials wasted our money this last year by wasting money on stupid resolutions during the term, then raking in additional money by holding "special sessions" and then delivering this "last minute" garbage amendment.

We need to tell our employees to "get it right" or we need to send a different group to Tallassee who can.

Rowden Needs To Go

I am getting tired of hearing the name Rowden. I am tired of seeing the name Rowden and, above all, I am tired of getting unsolicited phone calls from 352-585-4318, which is a Rowden phone number.

I attended a few commission meetings when Diane was sitting in the center chair and was appalled at her behavior. She acted like a queen bee and showed no regard or respect for the people of our community. She has also made some remarks to the local papers that displayed her ignorance of certain situations. It is time to get her and her husband out of our county commission seat.

Voice Of The People

Not Being Heard

I am in agreement with the letter printed in Hernado Today on Jan. 16 from Mike Grab in reference to the Hernando County government.

I tried to compose a letter yesterday myself but could not get my words together I was so upset.

I have voted for Mr. Kingsley and Mr. Russell before based on their previous service to the county when they had a voice for the people, but no more.

The county commissioners and the planning and zoning commissioners should be suspended for the rest of their terms for embarrassing the citizens of this county. Our friends ask: Why is your lawn so brown? While we try to honor the request to conserve water, the commissioners are approving more building. Why do you want to move? Lower taxes would be a good reason, etc.

I am all for growth but not when it takes away from the residents who have been here for years.
