In regards to "We Must All Tighten Our Belts," by K.L. Adams; the mere fact that these firefighters and officers of the law did, indeed, choose these dangerous jobs says that they respect and hold dear the lives of others as their own.
Yes, they know when they choose to be a fireman, sheriff, policeman, etc. that they are putting their life on the line at any given moment. Don't you think that this says so very much about their character and their selflessness? It says that they are willing to go out there and do a job that so many of us take for granted and show no concern and/or respect for.
Look for a more passive job? You have got to be joking.
So many of these men and women have worked many years at these dangerous jobs and a lot of them will have enough years in, at one time or another, to retire and not have to put their life on the line any longer.
Your letter has too many contradictions.
