LAND O' LAKES - For a team that had not had a full squad practice since before Christmas, the Hernando Christian Academy Lions soccer team had a nice day of it Tuesday afternoon as Kevin Herbert scored three goals while Sean Byrne had two goals and an assist in a 6-1 win at Academy at the Lakes.

The Lions, who are now 7-3-3 overall and 3-1-1 in Class 2A, District 9, jumped to an early 5-0 lead after one half before their lack of practice finally caught up to them in the second half.

"We were off for the two weeks over the holidays and that made things really difficult for us," said HCA Head Coach Matt Carrao. "Some of the kids were away on vacations, although we had a couple of captain's practices, where we would get three or four kids together."

Dominant first half

The Lions dominated the first half as Herbert scored three goals while Byrne added two goals and an assist and Ken Lehman had three assists as HCA outshot Academy at the Lakes by 12-1 in the first half.

"Yesterday was the first time some of them had touched a ball in two weeks and they're not really in game shape," said Carrao.
Tony Waters scored a goal for the Wildcats in the 48th minute before Cole Bergstrom added a final goal for HCA.

"This is the third time we've played them and we'll probably face them again in the district tournament," Carrao said about the Wildcats. "We ran out of game in the second half and made some defensive mistakes. But the good thing to come out of this is that we got some playing time for our younger kids."
