What Rust?

Published: January 13, 2008

BROOKSVILLE – What little rust Hernando Christian Academy (HCA) had from the holidays didn't last long as the Lady Lions blew out Dunnellon Christian Academy (DCA) at home Tuesday night, 73-7.
Holding the Lady Eagles (6-3) from DCA to just four first-quarter points, and five at halftime, the Lady Lions (10-3) roared up and down the court.
HCA Head Coach Jim Bragg started with a 1-3-1, full-court trap that the Lady Eagles had never seen before. They didn't handle it very well, turning the ball over 37 times.
The turnovers gave the Lady Lions several fast-break points, and allowed the hosts to go to the line 27 times as a result of DCA trying to stop the lay-ups.

Off and running

Despite a significant height disadvantage, HCA's Mary Ellen Langley was able to steal the opening tip from the Lady Eagles' center Rachel Mack and the Lady Lions were off and running.
With 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter, HCA was on top by 16 points,
Meredith Hanshaw was able to scoop up a loose ball, and drive the lane scoring two of her seven points giving HCA a 22-4 lead at the end of the quarter.
Shuffling a new line-up in and out the entire game, Coach Bragg was able to keep the pressure on DCA, allowing just one point in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, on the offensive end, the Lady Lions countered with 18 points. With 6:10 left in the second quarter, Hanshaw was able to get one of her two steals, and drive the length of the floor and lay it in for two of her 12 markers on the night.
At the 3:34 mark in the second quarter, Brittany Flowers cleared the boards with one of her six rebounds on the night and made a perfect outlet pass to Langley, who pushed the ball up the floor and found Madison Manuel breaking to the hoop for two more points.
Less than a minute later Heidi Riley intercepted an errant pass and fed Audrey Allen down court resulting in an easy lay-up.
With 1:54 left in the second quarter, Riley stole a pass and this time found Flowers for two more easy points.
With a commanding lead, Coach Bragg changed to a half-court zone, switching up between a 2-3 zone and a 3-2 zone with a little man-to-man mixed in.
The second half was played with a running clock but that didn't slow HCA much with Danielle Kuka hitting three of her five field goals for a total of 11 points.
Kimberly Armstrong wasn't about to be left out and she came out firing, hitting three in a row for a total of six points.
Allen led all scorers with 13 points, getting five rebounds and adding four steals herself.
DCA Head Coach Christopher Thompson was impressed with HCA. He explained that he came up here to play a better caliber team and give his girls experience with the full-court press.
"We are very young," Thompson said. "We've been doing this 2-3 half-court trap, but no one in our conference does it. In our conference we're number one. I knew this team would out-run us. My girls learned what I've been teaching them. That was our whole goal for this game. I told them I wanted a learning experience. I don't care if it's 100-2, I want you to learn. And now we know what to work on."
