BROOKSVILLE - BROOKSVILLE -
BROOKSVILLE Dog lovers will be treated this week when Florida Classic Clusters comes to town. The event is a 10 day series of dog shows. More than 150 different breeds will be shown daily, and competitors come from across the country.
The event is hosted by five kennel clubs including Hernando, Pasco, Clearwater, Manatee, and Tampa Bay. All are part of the American Kennel Club. Contrary to what some might think all breeds are shown every day of the event. "Many people think there are specific days for breeds, but they are all shown every day, and each day is a different show" Dan Stolz, a representative from Florida Classic Clusters, said.
According to the Florida Classic Clusters Web site at www.floridaclassicpark.com, this show is the largest dog show in the state of Florida, and has been named one of the top 20 events in the southeastern United States by the Southeast Tourism Society.
In addition to the dog shows, free tours offering a behind the scenes look at the dog shows are available to the public every day of the event. Visitors can see and learn how dogs are judged and meet handlers. "We walk around and explain how everything works, including the point system" Stolz said.
A doggie fun zone is available to anyone who would like to bring their pet for a fee of $10. The fun zone is a lure course that requires no previous experience. Sixty-five vendors will also be on the grounds selling pet toys, jewelry, and dog treats. Pets will not be allowed on the official AKC show grounds.
Since schools are closed for Hernando, Manatee, and Pinellas counties on Friday, Jan. 18 that will be "kid's day." The first 100 children under 15-years-old to take a tour of the show grounds will receive a free baseball cap.
Last year there were more than 18,000 entries for this event, and exhibitors came from all over the country, as well as South America, Mexico, and Canada.
Although admission to the event is free, portions of any proceeds will go to charitable organizations. Rescued pets will be on site and available for adoption through the show dates. Junior competitors (ages 14 and under) will also participate in this event.
Florida Classic Clusters will take place Jan. 10-14 and Jan. 16-20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Florida Classic Park is located at 5360 Lockhart Road, Brooksville. Admission is free to all who attend, parking is $5. Parking for seniors is free on Jan. 14.
