Hernando Audubon Society announces the following activities for January:
Bird Walk at Bayport will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 12. If interested in attending, meet the group at 7 a.m. sharp at Hardee's Restaurant located at 6292 Commercial Way in the Weeki Wachee Village plaza at State Road 50 and U.S. 19, Weeki Wachee. The walk will be a coastal trip concentrating on shorebirds and coastal inhabitants. For more information, call Bernie at 352-754-9030.
Merritt Island Birding Trip will be held Friday, Jan. 18. The annual trip to Titusville will feature one of the finest birding sites in the nation. If interested in attending, meet the group at 8:30 a.m. at the kiosk located on the right side of the causeway leading to Merritt Island. Reservations are required, so call Shirley Kohler at 352-683-9370.
Environmentally Sensitive Land Workday at Peck Sink will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. Join Jim King, land manager, and the Hernando Audubon Society for a morning of work and exploration. For more information, call Linda at 352-754-9436 or e-mail hernandoaudubon@yahoo.com.
Birding at Mosaic Mines will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30. One of Audubon's best trips of the year, having seen over 70 species in the past. If interested in attending, meet the group at 8:30 a.m. sharp at the McDonald's on State Road 60 in Mulberry. For reservations, call Shirley as soon as possible at 352-683-9370.
In addition, Hernando Audubon will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Brooksville Community Center, 201 East Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville. Featured speaker will be Dr. Frederick "Fritz" Davis, Professor of History at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Dr. Davis will discuss his experience researching and writing about Archie Carr, the renowned Florida naturalist and sea turtle authority, for Dr. Davis's new book, "The Man Who Saved Sea Turtles: Archie Carr and the Origins of Conservation Biology." Snacks and beverages will be served, so arrive early for socializing. Admission to the lecture is free of charge and is open to the public. For more information, call Andy at 352-686-8195.
