Crystal River to host 21st annual Manatee Festival
CRYSTAL RIVER The 21st annual Florida Manatee Festival festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13.
The event is sponsored by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Crystal River and the Rotary Club of Crystal River.
Visitors will be asked to give a $2 donation for guests 12 and older. Proceeds go the Chamber of Commerce which funds projects to benefit the community including high school scholarships.
In honor of the festival's namesake, the endangered manatee, the festival will offer its visitors the opportunity to view the manatee in its own environment.
Outdoor enthusiast can take boat tours for a nominal fee and will take visitors out on the beautiful Kings Bay to witness this gentle giant in the captivating waters in which the manatee calls "home."
This year, visitors can also get up close and personal with the manatee by taking a kayak tour with a local guide.

Chinsegut Nature Center announces January schedule
History of Naval Stores and Turpentine: Jan. 8, Tuesday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sid Taylor, with Divison of Forestry, will take us on a history tour of how pine gum was extracted from our native pine trees.
Creating Backyard Wildlife Habitat: Jan. 18, Friday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Come learn how to create ideal habitat in your backyard for mammals, birds, reptiles & amphibians, butterflies, bats and other Florida wildlife.
Map and Compass Class by Chinsegut Volunteers: Jan. 26, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will supply the equipment and teach you how to use a map and compass. Participants will also learn about geocaching. Class size is limited to 30.
Chisegut Night Hike: Jan. 25, Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. Join us as we listen and look for owls, frogs and other night creatures. Bring a flashlight.
Chinsegut Nature Center is open to the public every Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Recreation Department Offers Acting Class
SPRING HILL The Hernando County Recreation Department will offer its popular Acting class from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning Saturday, Jan. 12. The class is a continuous program which is held at 3400 Deltona Blvd., at the Entrance to Delta Woods Park, Spring Hill. Children 9 years through 15 years of age are eligible. The instructor is Vince Vanni, assisted by Abby Dix. Vanni's students have appeared in most area theater projects as well as many television and radio commercial spots. The fee is $35 per month and family discounts are available.

Hernando Performing Arts to host Forbidden Broadway Feb. 15
The Hernando Performing Arts Board 2007-08 Season concerts are held in the Hernando High School Art Center and benefit Hernando High School students of the arts

Crystal Blues to perform at January Bandshell Bash
BROOKSVILLE The Hernando County Fine Arts Council and Bandshell Bash Committee have announced Crystal Blues will be performing at the Classic Bash, scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Hernando Park, 204 E. Fort Dade Ave. The concert is free.

Art reception scheduled for Jan. 16
BROOKSVILLE The public is invited to attend an art reception and meet the artists whose works are on display in the Winter Art Exhibit in City Hall. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Knights of Columbus to host fashion show
SPRING HILL Knights of Columbus Council 11317 Ladies Auxiliary will host a fashion show and luncheon at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at St. Joan of Arc Parish Hall, 13485 Spring Hill Drive. Fashions will be by Jeannine Rollins of "Weekenders," and the luncheon menu will be fruit cocktail, chicken piccata, vegetable medley, scalloped potatoes, cream puff, coffee or tea.
A raffle and door prizes will be featured. Ticket cost will be $12 per person, and tickets will be available at the Parish Office or call Dorothy at 352-686-7979 or Carol at 686-4030.
Woman's Club to host Sweetheart Coffee
BROOKSVILLE Brooksville Woman's Club will host its fourth annual Sweetheart Coffee from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Clubhouse located at 131 South Main St., Brooksville. Coffee flavored to your choice, finger sandwiches and dessert will be served. Local entertainer/vocalist Kevin Longhorn, one-man show Country Western performer, will be featured.
Ticket cost is $5 per person.

Slovene-American Club to host two dances
SPRING HILL Slovene-American Club will host two dances as follows: From 7 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, the club will feature Bobby Kravos & Band from Cleveland, Ohio, at SNPJ Lodge 778 located at 13383 County Line Road, Spring Hill.
Bobby Kravos is the nephew of Frank Yankovic, The Polka King. Polkas, waltzes and variety music will be played. Food and refreshments will be available. The donation will be $10 per person, and tickets can be purchased at the door.
The Club will hold a two-day winter dance Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-27, at the SNPJ Lodge.
The dance will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday; and from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The event will feature the music of Frank Moravcik & Band from Cleveland, Ohio. Polkas, waltzes and variety music will be played. Food and refreshments will be available. The donation will be $10 each day or $18 both days, and tickets can be purchased at the door. Mariner United Methodist to hold yard sale
SPRING HILL Mariner United Methodist Church will hold a huge yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, at the church located at 7079 Mariner Blvd., one block south of State Road 50, Spring Hill. Adult and children clothes, linens, leather goods, books, jewelry, boutique, furniture and tools will be featured.

28th Brooksville Raid to be held Jan. 19-20
BROOKSVILLE The 28th annual Brooksville Raid Festival Civil War re-enactment will be held at Sand Hill Scout Reservation, 20428 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.
Festival starts at 9 a.m. Admission for adults is $6, age 6 to 12 is $3, under 5 is free.

Market on Main Street to be held Jan. 19
BROOKSVILLE The monthly Market on Main Street event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month throughout the year, except June, July and August.
Main Street, between Broad and Liberty Street, and the City Parking Lot between Main Street and Brooksville Avenue will be closed during the event.

Winter Art Exhibit will run until Feb. 12
BROOKSVILLE The Winter Art Exhibit at City Hall will run until Feb. 12 and features hand-painted porcelain by the Hernando Porcelain Artists, handmade quilts by the Hernando Quilters, ship models by the Suncoast Ship Model Society, photographs from the Spring Hill Camera Club and poetry by the members of Just Poets.
