I believe I speak for many when I say that I was a little disappointed in the last few issues of Hernando Today. With the Christmas season at hand, I would have preferred seeing some night shots of the beautifully decorated homes here in Spring Hill. There were many of them breathtaking, and none made the front cover - a big disappointment!
Instead, we had a picture of people shopping - wow - that's different. An everyday occurrence - nothing great about that! And the other headliner was a very sad story about a cow that got "mauled" by four neighborhood dogs and had to be "put down" from 11 gunshots - six shots from the farmer and several shots from the law enforcement. I would think the farmer should have had some inkling of how to put a cow down if he has been farming long. What a horrible way to go. As for the four dogs that mauled the cow, I've read nothing further about them - no comment!
I think it's disgraceful that this kind of thing happens. I have been under the impression that dogs have to be fenced in - apparently not. This was not an appropriate story for the holidays.
In addition to the cow story, we can always add the fireworks tents around town or around every corner. Since when have fireworks come into play at Christmas? Even as I write this, I can hear them in the area. This isn't the Fourth of July - this is Christmas! I thought fireworks were illegal in Florida.
Families are joined together on Christmas Eve - relaxing, anticipating the next morning's activities, when all of a sudden, we hear boom, boom, boom.
I totally agree with Carolyn Allard in her recent article - "a quiet, peaceful holiday in the country was abruptly brought to an end by the loud noise of fireworks!" The sale of fireworks should not be allowed at Christmas, and hopefully next year our newspaper will make better choices for holiday greetings.

Editor's note: We'll try to do better next year highlighting some of the fantastic Christmas displays that neighbors erect throughout Hernando County. Maybe we can even sponsor a contest with local businesses and recognize the winners on a photo page and prizes.
