BROOKSVILLE – For the second year in a row, the acclaimed Pete Dye championship golf course at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville has been named to two of "Golfweek's Best" lists.
Golfweek magazine, one of the nation's leading golf publications, has ranked the course among the nation's top 50 best new courses and the top 100 best residential courses for 2007.
"Southern Hills Plantation Club looks and feels like a golf course that has been there a long time," said Bradley S. Klein, Golfweek's Best Courses program director and architecture editor for the magazine. "The corridors are generous, the mature trees framing the holes give it a sense of well-established presence, and the relaxed land plan with homes set back from the lines of play allow you to enjoy Pete Dye's work without feeling like you're intruding in someone's backyard."
Golfweek's course rankings are based on input from nearly 450 raters who regularly survey more than 1,800 golf courses and base their judgment on 10 different criteria. Golfweek's 50 best new courses are selected from 350 courses that have opened in the past three years, and 100 best residential courses are chosen from about 1,000 properties in the country.
"We're pleased to be recognized with these distinctions in both of the years that Southern Hills has been open," said M.G. Orender, president of Hampton Golf, which manages the course. As a past president of the PGA of America (2005-2006), and a 30-year veteran of golf management in the state, Orender is a recognized expert on Florida golf. He guarantees, "Anyone who plays the course will agree with Golfweek that it offers a premier golf experience."
Southern Hills features Dye's signature style as it winds up and down steep hills and stands of ancient oak trees.
