Animal Cruelty Investigation Open

BROOKSVILLE - An animal cruelty investigation is under way after deputies discovered a house packed with 22 dogs, three cats and a seven-foot Burmese python on Thursday.

Investigators said the animals at 24514 Audubon Drive were living in a "neglected state," citing urine and feces on the floor of the 1,600-square-foot house.

Deputy Dane Jenkins was on scene and said the animals did not appear emaciated, but did have fleas and "numerous skin disorders," including mange. All but the cats were inside the house.

Three of the puppies seized were groomed as if for sale, according to the sheriff's office. It took three of Animal Control's covered pickups to take away all of the animals.

Debra Harmon lives in the home and claimed all of the animals as her own. Investigators are verifying her claim that all the animals had been examined by a veterinarian.

A woman inside the home waved a reporter away and said she had no comment.

No charges have been filed.

Deputies were serving two arrest warrants on John Arthur Stansfield Sr. when they came across the animals. Stansfield was wanted on charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property.
