NEW PORT RICHEY - A few years ago, Nature Coast Technical's wrestling
Head Coach Mike Lastra would have been elated if he could simply field an entire team
for any tournament, much less have a decent chance of winning.
But this year things are much different and so are the Sharks. NCT came within a pin
of making it into Saturday semifinals of the 8th annual Gulf Duals Wrestling
Tournament at the Joe Bever Gymnasium.
The Sharks, who last week finished in a tie for seventh in the Brooksville Kiwanis Invitational,
went 4-1 in the two-day, 20-team event.

Nature Coast won their opening three matches over Land O'Lakes, Sunlake and
Ridgewood before losing to Belleview, 42-36.
In that match, NCT trailed by two points, 36-34, when Dante Santamarie
pinned Mack McManus to clinch the win for the Diamond Rattlers.
"That was the best result we ever had in a dual meet before," commented
Lastra. "It came down to the very last match. But eventually you
have to start getting tired of moral victories. I know I'm tired of
them."
The Sharks won their opening three matches in the pool as they beat
Land O'Lakes (72-9), Sunlake (61-22) and set a school record for points by
shutting out Ridgewood, 81-0.
After the tournament, the Sharks wrestled another match, besting
Lecanto 50-30.

Solid efforts

NCT had three wrestlers finish the weekend unbeaten as Matt Henn went
5-0 at 103 pounds, David Simsonson went 5-0 splitting time at 119 and 125 while
Jeff Gilbert was 5-0 at 215.
Overall in the tournament, the Sharks had a record of 51-17 with 31
pins and came within an eyelash of making its first tournament
semifinal.
"We've got more kids and because of that we have more competition
in our wrestling room," said Lastra. "That's the bottom
line, once the kids get a feeling of winning, they will want to do
better."
In the pivotal Belleview match, the Sharks got pins from Simonson, Shayne
Gracteroly and Rockkheem "The Dream" Greene and wins from Henn and Matt
Lambert.
"Coming in, I thought we could win our pool and make the semifinals,"
said Lastra. "We got a great tournament from Matt Lambert, Rockkheem
Greene and David Simonson.
"But now our kids know what it's like to be in a championship match.
Belleview's a tough team, but our guys know they were this close to
winning."
