SPRING HILL - The surroundings changed, and so did the other team competing. Yet the results looked strikingly similar for Springstead High.

A week after the two-time defending county champion Lady Eagles opened the season with a 60-27 rout at Hernando, they ousted Central, 63-26, Wednesday afternoon in their home weight room.

"Overall, I was happy with the performance," Springstead Head Coach Mike Garofano said. "I think the girls work real hard and it's showing in some of their totals.

"Frances Pagan, Olivia D'Acunto, Stephanie Jeffords, their totals increased from last week by 5-10 pounds in a week's time and those three girls have been working hard throughout and it's paying off."

Near sweep

Springstead (2-0) claimed first place in eight of the 10 weight classes, with six repeat winners from the Hernando meet. Also, the Lady Eagles finished second in eight classes.

Seniors Lindsay Kuhn and Courtney Toles went 1-2 at 101 pounds, the former putting together a 80-100 – 180 and the latter 95-75 – 170.

Caroline Monzo (95-110 – 205) and Ariana Garcia (70-80 – 150) garnered the top two spots as 110, as did Vicky Boccio (95-95 – 190) and Jeffords (90-90 – 180) at 119.

Springstead repeated this in three other classes, including Jenn Draganchuk (105-120 – 225) and Kate Killory (110-110 – 220) at 139, Karlee Burrows (120-120 – 240) and Britt Parson (100-100 – 200) at 154, and D'Acunto (135-120 – 255) and Jeanette Boudreau (85-85 – 170) at 183.

Finishing up the Lady Eagle winners, Brittany Morgan took first at 129 (90-120 – 210) and Pagan at unlimited (135-115 – 250).

Kuhn, Monzo, Boccio, Draganchuk, Burrows and D'Acunto also won against Hernando. Monzo set a new county-high this time around, besting her 95-95 – 190 the previous week, as did D'Acunto, improving from 130-115 – 245.

Central (0-2) took the top spot in just two classes, with sophomore Kelly Nelson taking 169 with a 120-105 – 225. She came in as the county leader at that weight with a 230 last week versus Lecanto.

Fellow sophomore Kim Forte won at 199 with a 125-110 – 235. Senior Sydney Tucker got second at 129 (100-105 – 205) and junior Stephanie Stephens did the same at unlimited (130-110 – 240).

"We had a lot of people improve from last week and by the time county (meet) comes around in January, I'll be a good competition between the four teams," Central Head Coach Cliff Lohrey said.

"Just about everybody improved, so I don't want to say any individual. Collectively everyone is getting stronger. It was a good day. Springstead is very strong."

Neither team will compete again until the first week of January, as the season takes a hiatus for Christmas break.

"The worst part of this sport is it's broken up so much," Garofano said. "With Christmas break now, everyone is going on vacation. We'll try to get as many people in here over break and hopefully don't fall off too much."
