BROOKSVILLE - If not for a few technicalities, it could have been Nature Coast Technical toting home the second-place trophy on Saturday.
Instead, the host Bears finished as runners-up to Palm Harbor in the six-team Bear Duals, thanks to a tiebreaking criteria that twice foiled the Sharks.
Central finished 4-1 on the day, its only loss coming to Palm Harbor (39-30), but it nearly blew a big lead to Nature Coast, who ended up 2-3 to come in fourth.
Big comeback
The two county teams faced off in the fifth and final round of the day, and the Bears seemed to have everything under control holding a 34-7 advantage.
David Merced (103 pounds), David Supple (112), Robbie Monseger (119), Ken Supple (135) and Vince Ramirez (140) all recorded pins for Central, while Shaun Cadoret (145) added a 15-1 major decision.
Then the Sharks reeled off a remarkable five straight pins, by Ryan McCabe (152), Luke McCarty (160), Shayne Gracteroly (171), Rockkhem Greene (189) and Jeff Gilbert (215).
That actually put Nature Coast in front, 37-34, going into the 285 bout between Chad Dampier and Danny May. In his only match of the day, May outlasted Dampier, 4-1, to knot it at 37.
The outcome was decided by criteria F, the most takedowns. Earlier in the tournament, the Sharks lost a 42-42 match to Auburndale by criteria G, most near falls.
"I'm upset we got fourth place," Nature Coast Head Coach Mike Lastra said. "Going in we were hoping to finish near the top. But a deeper look shows we wrested pretty well today.
"A couple kids stepped up. The young kids looked like young kids, which is expected. And the older kids wrestled well."
The Sharks, in their first action of the season, began the tournament with the heartbreaker against Auburndale, then lost to Palm Harbor (41-31) before beating Lecanto (39-35) and Ocala-Vanguard (54-27).
Returning state qualifier David Simonson led the way despite missing weight as his customary 119. At 125, he went 5-0 with three pins.
"Just (did) the same thing I've been doing," said the senior Simonson. "Beat them to the takedown, ride them, get points where I can. I made sure I didn't do anything to mess me up."
Greene, a fellow senior, also went 5-0 for the Sharks, notching three pins at 189. Dampier and Gilbert combined to go 5-0 with three pins at 215.
Bittersweet feeling
Despite pulling out the victory over Nature Coast, Central Head Coach Roy Reyes wasn't excited with his team's performance.
"We did not do good; we had a bad day," Reyes said. "We had guys banged up today, guys not wrestling up to their potential. But if we can take second on a bad day, that puts us ahead of the pack.
"We had some kids take care of business. Kenny Supple, Vince Ramirez look phenomenal. Danny May stepped up at a crucial time in the tournament. He's been banged up this week."
The Bears also defeated Vanguard (59-34), Auburndale (52-21) and Lecanto (40-33) in their first dual action of the year.
Merced, David Supple, Ken Supple and Ramirez each went 5-0, with Ramirez notching five pins to go along with the four he had in the Alan Solomon Wrestling Classic two weeks earlier.
He improved to 9-0 on the young season, though he sported a brace around the shoulder he injured last season. Still, he declared himself healthy.
"I just want to get to states," the junior said. "Keep doing what I'm doing, work hard.
"There were a few tough kids that were fighting pretty hard. I just tried to capitalize on their mistakes."
