Humane Society Announces Expansion Plans

Published: December 6, 2008

BROOKSVILLE - Grand plans for expansion were unveiled Friday at the Humane Society of the Nature Coast.

Construction is expected to begin next year on a new 15,000-square-foot building. But first the funds have to be raised.

Building plans will determine exactly how much is needed, but the current estimate stands at $750,000. During a dedication ceremony Friday, the organization's executive director, Joann Schoch, explained why.

For 40 years, the facility on the corner of Mobley and Wiscon roads has made piecemeal improvements. This time around, they want to do everything right the first time, Schoch said.

For example, recent renovations on a cat cottage updated the tile floor, but the grout in a tile floor absorbs bacteria and smells. A special epoxy flooring will be used in the new building for optimal sanitation.

They will also improve the medical ward. Currently, ill animals are removed from the general population, but they still share air vents. Improvements in the new building will reduce all contact with sick animals.
Commercial washers and dryers will optimize the care.

Most importantly the shelter will expand beyond the number of kennels that are constantly kept full. About five years ago, the no-kill shelter had to begin a waiting list for space.

"Seventeen kennels for this size of a community just isn't enough," Schoch said.
