BROOKSVILLE - It might have been a better idea for the area cross country runners this year if Tampa Jesuit senior Connor Revord had gone ahead with his plans to play football instead of running.
Unfortunately, Revord changed his mind over the summer and stayed with cross country. He also won his third straight Red Mule Labor Day 5K run Saturday at McKethan Lake Park in Brooksville.
With a record field of 360 runners, Revord kept up with the early leaders before breaking loose in the second half of the race to win by seven seconds over Felix Soto.
On the female side, Pasco-Hernando Community College womens cross country coach Jackie Wachtel easily dominated, beating Central girls cross country coach Erin Courtney by more than a minute.
Wachtel, who like Revold has won the Red Mule race a number of times in the past, ran the 5K in 17:46, beating Courtney by 1:07.
"I felt great," Wachtel said after the race. "I felt really good today and I just love running this course."
She loves running the course so much that two years ago she won the race. But when asked how many times she has won it, Wachtel was vauge.
"I've run this race almost every year since I graduated from River Ridge in 1991," she said. "But honestly, I couldn't tell you how many times I've won it. I just don't keep track of those sort of things."
For Revold, running cross country may end up helping him land a college scholarship somewhere.
"I was going to go out this year for football for a change of pace," he said. "But then I thought about it and decided that if I ran cross country again this year, it would help me a lot in landing at a college next year."
