BROOKSVILLE - Coming off a 6-4 record last year, Central coach Cliff Lohrey came into this year knowing he had to replace a lot of veteran offensive players.
Friday night in a 49-7 loss to Dunedin in the preseason kickoff classic, Lohrey saw firsthand that improvements still need to be made.
Led by University of South Florida signee Adaris Bellamy, the Falcons simply controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game against the Bears.
But afterward, Lohrey was not ready to panic just yet about his team for the coming year.
"We knew coming in we still had some things to work on," Lohrey said. "But then Dunedin is a very good team."
Dunedin showed that early as Bellamy ran for one touchdown and gained 93 yards rushing on just nine attempts.
Back-up quarterback Ryan Singer threw for two touchdowns as the varsity teams played the opening three quarters before the junior varsity squads took over in the fourth quarter.
In the first half, Central had two interceptions and lost three fumbles to the Falcons as the Bear offense did not get a first down until late in the second quarter.
The Bears' lone score came late in the second quarter.
Quarterback Dallas Waugh launched a long pass near the Falcon end zone. But Bear wide receiver Steven Read went over the head of Dunedin defensive back Bennie Niles to pull in the pass and finish a 49-yard touchdown pass.
Besides that, the Bear offense had little to cheer about.
RB Austin Forte finished the game with 31 yards rushing on 10 carries while Waugh ended the night completing 3-of-7 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown.
When asked if he thought his players would have trouble getting over the loss, Lohrey said he didn't think that would happen.
"Look, I know that the kids will be disappointed about the loss and the fact that we didn't play very well," Lohrey said. "But we've got Hernando next week to start the season and I'm sure everyone will be working hard this week to get ready for it."
