BROOKSVILLE – Coming into Wednesday night's potential playoff championship game, Coney Island Drive Inn had just one loss all season.

However, the top seed failed to nail down the City of Brooksville Recreation Department crown at Jerome Brown Community Center, losing to Madyson Custom Home Builders, 31-19.

Despite playing its third game of the night, Madyson (16-5) pounded out 40 hits in forcing a winner-take-all title game Thursday at 7 p.m.

"We all showed up and hit the ball," said Pasha Darby, Madyson team captain. "We just came to play. We've been playing a long time. Win or lose, we're going to have fun."

Scott Shuster had five hits in his first five at-bats for Madyson, including a grand slam in a seven-run top of the second and a solo shot in the fifth.

Eric Stocker had two bombs of his own to help Madyson build a 22-8 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth.

Coney Island (17-2) batted around in that inning, sending 14 men to plate. The first 11 reached base in a 10-run outburst, featuring a three-run homer off the bat of Todd Goetz and a solo blast from Trevor Coleman, his second of the game.

Madyson went down in order in the sixth, however Coney Island tacked on only one more in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 22-19.

In the seventh Steve Sereda hit a two-run triple to the wall in centerfield and Darby added a three-run homer down the leftfield line, part of a nine-run frame that sealed the victory.

"They hit the ball," said Eddie Cozart, Coney Island captain. "They're a great ball club."

Earlier Madyson had defeated Jimmy Diablos, 16-10, and AMAX, 21-11, in two elimination games of this double-elimination tournament. Coney Island sent AMAX into the loser's bracket with a 25-9 win.
