SPRING HILL - Books-A-Million has 39 stores throughout Florida.
Number 40 will not be going up in either Spring Hill or Brooksville, the company said Thursday.
"We're always looking to expand in Florida, and Spring Hill is a really great community," said Books-A-Million spokeswoman Susan Wilkinson, "but it's not something we currently have on the books right now."
Opus South Corporation, the developer of the Nature Coast Commons – located south of the intersection of U.S. 19 and Spring Hill Drive – would not confirm whether it is in negotiations with any other bookstore retailer.
Neither Borders nor Barnes and Noble would comment about negotiations for future sites.
"We don't comment on sites until, and unless, we sign a lease," said Borders spokeswoman Mary Davis.
Opus South spokesman Dan Morris said in March that Spring Hill was not densely populated enough to attract the likes of Borders or Barnes and Noble. He also said Books-A-Million often goes where the other two stores do not, but he would not confirm whether his company had been in talks with the retailer.
There has been speculation for months that Books-A-Million would open a store at Nature Coast Commons. It also has been suggested the company was looking at a site at Suncoast Crossing Shopping Center, located at Spring Hill Drive and the Suncoast Parkway. Kohl's and Target are the only two stores that have signed a lease for that location.
The Spring Hill entry on Wikipedia has Books-A-Million listed as a future store at the Nature Coast Commons.
The anchor store at Nature Coast is JCPenney, which opened in March. Cracker Barrel will open later this year, while Best Buy, Arby's, Wachovia, Mattress Giant, Office Depot and the Sports Authority are expected to open next year.
Opus did confirm Friday that clothing retailer Ross has signed a lease for that location. It was not known how many square feet it will occupy.
It will be the second Ross store in Hernando County. The other is located in the Mariner Landing Shopping Center at 13110 Cortez Blvd.
