Neighbors Should Take Care Of Abandoned Lawns

Published: August 23, 2008

For the past several days, I've been reading about homeowners who are having a problem with abandoned homes and the overgrown yards they have to live with.

I saw poor Rich Dellasso standing in a yard that was so overgrown that it will take a bush hog to cut it.

My neighbors and I faced this problem back in February when our young neighbors had to leave their home due to over extending themselves. While they were packing their moving van, several of their friends were saying their goodbyes, when I asked the neighbor just on the other side of them what could we do about their yard? We agreed that this overgrown situation would not happen, and each week we both mow half of that yard! It takes me about 15 minutes extra to do this, and we have no overgrown mess next to us.

Instead of getting your picture on the front page and moaning about your fate, why not get off your butt and do the neighborly thing and do something about it? So many people want the government to do something for them instead of hitching up their pants and doing it themselves.

Maybe you could get your picture in the paper for doing something positive? Then again, what kind of picture would that be, "here's Jim mowing his neighbors lawn, yawn."
