Support DAV Project

Disabled American Veterans nationally recognized officials came to Hernando County on July 22 to promote, among other considerations, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial that may be the last veterans' honored place visitors can consider on the Washington, D.C. Mall near the Cannon House building. This is an $88 million concept dedicated to the disabled veterans coming home from war torn countries in far-flung corners of the globe. Only $16 million remains to be paid to get shovels to turn and begin the monument for our nation's honored veterans.

Jim Sursely, past national DAV commander and the poster representative for the disabled, is a triple amputee Vietnam veteran, and Frank Tracy, ex-POW World War II, current DAV State of Florida Department Commander, coupled their influence to visit Hernando County and the city of Brooksville. It was at the request of our Brooksville DAV Chapter with a mission to address the urgency of finalizing funds for the memorial on the Washington, D.C., Mall.

Veteran organizations are pushing hard in the next three months to raise the funds as timelines and deadlines approach. The DAV is out in full force right now in the effort because every $1,000 it collects has pledges and promises to round that $1,000 to $4,000. Hernando County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to support the effort with $1,000. DAV Chapter in Brooksville and the Fifth District DAV pitched in another $1,000.

This will be a great opportunity for other organizations in the community to offer donations substantial enough to allow pledges to increase the dollar amount, including veterans' organizations locally.

A quick call to me, Deron Mikal, to my cellular phone 352-398-6549 will allow us to get together for the contribution; and I will follow through with a letter and plaque of recognition to your organization. Timing is everything, so I am hopeful our current campaign for funds will get underway with dispatch.

Involuntary Donation

Attention Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (WREC) customers.

If you paid your bill on Friday, Aug. 1, please check your receipt. Mine is dated Aug. 4. You know what that means; more of a deposit even though they have $700 of mine. I paid $140; my receipt said $139.04 toward energy and 96 cents to Operation Round-Up. Apparently, my husband had signed up years ago. They told me I had to do that, which I thought was voluntary; whatever change was left over.

Not to mention my bill went up $60; I'm not even doing laundry here because my dryer is broken. The topper was that I had to put my sweatshirt on because it was so cold in the WREC lobby, and they're telling us to turn our thermostats up.

Shame on you, WREC.

Questionable Characters

I am writing in regards to a letter written by Mr. Wood in which he questions Sen. John McCain's integrity, bringing up certain personal events in the senator's life. If we're going to go this route, then it is only fair that Sen. Barack Obama's integrity be questioned as well.

There is an old saying that you can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep, and there is a lot to say about the company Sen. Obama has kept with during his career.

Sen. Obama has long been associated with the Chicago political machine, a machine noted for its corruption. Of course, we all know about his association with the Rev. Wright, the racist American-hating minister, and, quite frankly, I find it hard to believe that after spending some 20 years in his church that Sen. Obama never heard the Rev. Wright spew this vile hate speech during his sermons. Then, of course, there is association with William Ayres, the unrepentant former member of the 1960s radical terrorist group, the Weathermen.

I could go on and on, but I think I made my point.

Now, I am not trying to say that Sen. McCain is perfect, nor am I trying to make accusations for the things he did in his past. It is my humble opinion that neither one of these men is truly worthy of holding the office of the president of the United States. They both are of questionable character, but at least the one good thing I can say about Sen. McCain is that he has never associated with radicals and racists.
