Loophole Highlights Flaw In Election Law Accountability

Published: August 8, 2008

Regarding the story on our District 44 state House surprise Green Party candidate that appeared in the Hernando Today. I would like to clarify a couple of points that got lost in the more than 20-minute conversation that reporter Tony Marrero and I had the other day.

1.) I do not feel like we are running a candidate. Sarah Roman is someone who jumped into her very first race and chose to run as Green. A worthy choice, I must admit. We stand for real values that are sorely lacking in the political climate that we are seeing in the United States these days. I've seen her MySpace page and although it is not very "Green," she has sworn an oath to represent our party.

2.) My main concern is this: Greens believe in open and fair elections. We feel that voters deserve to be able to have a candidate on the ballot who does meet the particular values and standards of the party they are, supposedly, representing. Otherwise, what would be the purpose of any parties at all? The Greens are challenging this little paragraph in the election law that allows anyone to throw down cash and choose their party. This was put in by your current state leaders. How do you like it, voters?

3.) This candidate is 22 years old and running for a state office. She has some educational credentials that, I think, give her an edge over state Rep. Robert Schenk, who I've always felt, was a corporate puppet who did no thinking on his own.

We are going national with this issue and we shall see how this election law gets interpreted. Will it stand? Will people be held legally accountable? Stay tuned.
