I had said I wasn't going to write anymore on the subject, but I have to Mr. Dunlop, because you did it again! You cite data you gleaned from the EIA Web site and then conveniently cull bits and pieces of information to support your position and ignore facts that disprove it! A typical enviro-whacko ploy.
Go back on the EIA Web site (everybody should) and search the word "Bakken." The Bakken Formation is the home of the largest domestic oil discovery since Prudhoe Bay. It is in the Williston Basin and is located in northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada. This deposit contains an estimated 503 billion barrels.
So, now you know why Joseph Romm is a FORMER Energy Department Official - he apparently doesn't know squat about domestic oil production or capacity (if you quoted him correctly). Most of the Gulf of Mexico is not open to drilling nor is 85 percent of the rest of our coastline.
And how dare you presume to say I think electric and natural gas powered cars are futuristic and impractical. They soon will become commercially available at a reasonable price and that's wonderful news. I also saw the YouTube blurb on the car that runs on water - that is why I mentioned it. It currently costs in excess of $200,000 to produce, so why don't you run out and buy two, one for me and one for you.
And while you are Google-ing, go to "Rolling Brownouts." There you will find out what will happen when everyone plugs in their car, truck, bus, boat, plane or train into the local grid for recharging. Only 1.6 percent of U.S. electricity? Tell that to the folks who are watching their electric bills increasing by 20 percent. A billion bucks here, a billion bucks there and pretty soon you're talking real money!
Get real! We aren't going to replace internal combustion engines overnight! It will take decades to wean us off petroleum and you know it. You say it takes 5 to 10 years to develop a producing oil well and then try to say it takes a week or two to convert all the internal combustion engines in the country to alternative energy. What's wrong with that picture?
Your position is quite clear now. Walk, ride a bike, get a horse, starve, drop dead. Do anything except drill! I get it - enough already!
P.S. They say there are copious amounts of methane that can be derived from bull manure. Hmmm - think about it.
