New County Commission

Should Hire Administrator

Re: "Committee Narrows Top Boss List To Three," Dec. 22, Hernando Today.
County Commissioner Diane Rowden is correct. The committee to screen applications for appointment of yet another administrator should have been selected by the board of commissioners. It is not a staff function.

Further, importance of appointment necessitates the board scrutinizing all applications and determining its own short list of those to be interviewed by it.

Maybe appointment of this administrator should be postponed until after November 2009. By then the expected new board of commissioners will be in office. Such is the board with whom the administrator needs to be compatible.

Christmas Deserves
Political Correctness
After reading a few letters and columns regarding the Christmas season, I thought I throw my two cents into the discussion.

To all those school systems and stores that will not acknowledge Christmas, I would ask them: Why don't you? Christmas is a national holiday, is it not? It has been for more than 100 years. You say you don't offend people who don't celebrate Christmas, well I, along with millions of other Americans, are offended by your political correctness.

I am also offended by organizations such as the ACLU and other groups that try in various ways to keep communities from reminding people that Christmas is a religious holiday by displaying various religious symbols on public land. Yet in the same breath, they will allow other religious groups to display their religious symbols during their holidays.

Again, Christmas is a national holiday, and for those people who have a problem with it, it's time for you to show some tolerance and not be so bigoted.

By the way, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.

Cruelty Begets Cruelty;

Father Sets Poor Example

Once again a quiet, peaceful holiday in the country was abruptly brought to an end by the loud noise of fireworks!

This is America, and everyone has a right to celebrate any way they chose. That said, it bothers me when I see dogs trembling, frothing at the mouth or pressed head first in a corner trying to hide, terrified with fear. Fear caused by a father, animal lover and Christian completely aware of the consequences of his enjoyment. Cruelty begets cruelty.

May the children fail to learn from this parent.

Letters policy

Editor's note: Our editorial page policy is to give priority to letters that are e-mailed to our office. Short, to-the-point letters also get special consideration. Letters of length will be considered for a guest column if they are succinct and well written.

We like to feature a variety of opinions, not the same writers all the time. Those who are writing the newspaper for the first time will be given special consideration for quicker placement. Those who write frequently may only be published once a month to give everybody a chance to share their opinions.

This page is reserved for our readers. Elected officials often have their opinions spelled out in our news columns. At times, we allow a platform for public officials, particularly if they need more space to enunciate an issue.

Send your missives to wwessel@hernandotoday.com or by snail mail to the newspaper at 15299 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, 34613. Please include your address and phone number for verification purposes. Only the author's name and hometown will be published with the letter.
