BROOKSVILLE - Earlier this year, the Hernando Christian Academy boys soccer team made a road trip to play The Villages and was handed a 4-0 loss that was probably worse than the score indicated.

But last Thursday, the Lions showed a completely different side as Jeff Basciano scored two goals while senior goalkeeper Joe Harrell turned away nine shots to post a 2-0 win against The Villages in a home match for the Lions.

"We played pretty good," said HCA coach Matt Carrao last week after the game. "Actually, it may have been the best game we've played so far this year."

The win boosted the Lions record to 4-1-2 overall while the Buffaloes tumbled to 2-4-1 as The Villages out shot HCA 18-4 in the game.

The Villages almost took an early lead in the game when Michel Chapuseaux took a free kick from the mid-field line and put it into the net, but the Buffaloes were called for being offside.

Opening goal
HCA got the first goal of the game after a throw in from the left side lines from Ken Lehman.

Lehman's pass found Basciano in the scoring box. He then turned and fired a shot that ricocheted off the left goal post and into the net with 20 minutes gone in the half.

In the second half, HCA caught a break late in the half. For most of the half, The Villages were applying most of the pressure in trying to squeeze the equalizer.

Then at 70 minutes, HCA sent a long ball into the goalie crease which the Lions' Kevin Herbert was attempting to run down. But Buffalo goalie Nathan Hearns knocked down Herbert with a shoulder and was called for a foul, which gave the Lions a penalty kick.
Basciano wasted no effort in putting it past the goalie and sewing up the win for HCA.

"I'm excited about the win," said Carrao. "We lost to them 4-0 on their field so it's nice to beat them on our home turf. We matched their intensity and their physical play and I think Sean Byrne did an outstanding job marking Chapuseaux for most of the game."
