Sheriff's Helicopter

Serves Vital Function

In response to the letter to the editor on Dec. 13 entitled, "Helicopter Policy Up In The Air," I do not know if the sheriff dispatches the helicopters unnecessarily; but many years ago, a young woman was taken from a Hernando County convenience store to the wetland woods west of U.S. 19, tied to a tree, assaulted and killed.

A sheriff's helicopter responded and found two culprits' pickup truck stuck in the wooded area, and they were apprehended. Who knows how many other assaults would have occurred if the pilots hadn't spotted them. Only a helicopter would have done the job.

Plus, helicopters hover over areas looking for older folks with problems who wander away and might be spotted from the air.

So keep the Hernando County air force! I, for one, am proud of them.

Be Patient; Housing Market Will Recover

This Sunday was not the first time I have been made aware of the housing market. The coming of a slump was not a surprise. I have lived through these several times.

In the 1970s, a friend of mine lost his shirt building condos around Miami. The condos on Spring Hill Drive were empty for years until the inflated boom arrived. As I have told you before, I took Economics 101 even though I was an art major; but I felt then, I had to know what was going on. I always remember the Mercantile Theory, supply and demand; and we sure have enough "supply." Many of the new homes are rentals.

Jobs are becoming scarce - good ones anyway. I always advised the young and anxious not to quit your job unless you have a new one down pat.

No one can tell when this downward trend will reverse. All you can do is be patient. The market fell flat on its face in 1987, and after 10 years, it recovered. There is not a miracle cure.

Many of you know I tell fortunes at the county's Halloween affair at the fairgrounds off U.S. 41. I can't tell you what the future is. I do hope we have rain soon.

Above The Law

From recent events, it seems that we have more to fear from Hernando Rambo deputies than from the criminal element! The attitude seems to be "so what if we injure, maim and possibly kill innocent drivers, so long as we get our man!"

Forget banning cell phones and driving, how about banning computers from being used by deputies while driving? I am sure if Joe Citizen had mowed down a little girl and used the excuse of "Oops, I was dialing my cell phone and there was severe fog," he would have been arrested. However, the "law" is immune from the very laws they pick and choose to enforce.

Opting Out Of

Brave New World

Did it ever occur to the people of television and radio that not everyone has, nor do they want, a computer?

Whatever happened to telephone numbers and a mailing address? I don't have a computer and don't ever expect to purchase one. After all, who would show me how to set one up or even to turn it on? And God forbid if it got a "bug;" who would I call to kill it? Just kidding.

What I hear of all the bad things that are happening through computers and e-mails, I would be afraid of what could happen if I owned one.

There are times when I see something on television that I would like to order, then they come up with "turn to" and "click on" to order. That's when I forget the whole thing. Excuse me for not being "hip" but I'll stay the way I am. For those who live on their computers, I say God bless; but I still like phone numbers and addresses when I order something. After all, in case television and radio forgot, there is still the phone and postal service.
